What Is a Croffle? Try One at Karkumi Cafe in Scarborough
A croffle is part croissant, part waffle, and very easy to like. Here is the simple version before you order one.
Some people know exactly what a croffle is.
Some people see the word on the menu and pause for a second.
Both are normal.
A croffle is basically croissant dough cooked in a waffle iron. It keeps some of the buttery, flaky feeling of a croissant, but the outside gets pressed and crisp like a waffle.
So you get this mix:
- crispy outside
- soft, buttery inside
- waffle ridges that catch syrup, cream, sauce, or toppings
That is the whole idea. It is not complicated, and it does not need to be.
Why people like croffles
Croffles became popular through Korean café culture, and now you see them on brunch and dessert menus in places like Scarborough, North York, Markham, and Toronto.
The exact origin story is a little messy, but the reason people like them is simple.
They are fun to eat.
A croissant is soft and flaky. A waffle is crisp and good with toppings. A croffle sits somewhere in the middle.
It is good for brunch because it can go sweet or savoury. You can put berries and ice cream on it. You can also put fried chicken on it. Both make sense.
That is why we like it on the Karkumi menu.
Sweet or savoury?
Croffles can go two ways.
The sweet version usually has things like berries, ice cream, syrup, whipped cream, honey, or icing sugar.
The savoury version can have crispy chicken, eggs, smoked salmon, cheese, or other brunch toppings.
The best croffles are served warm. Once they cool down, they are still good, but they lose some of that fresh crisp texture.
That is why we like to serve them hot.
Chicken Croffles
If this is your first croffle, we usually suggest the Chicken Croffles.
It is not a tiny snack. It is a real brunch plate.
You get a warm croffle with crispy fried chicken thigh and maple syrup on the side. The croffle is buttery and crisp. The chicken is savoury. The syrup brings the sweet part in.
It is the kind of dish that makes sense after the first bite.
Menu price: $21

It looks nice on the table, but more importantly, it is easy to eat.
